DERMAPLANING 101 (EVEN FOR ACNE PRONE SKIN!)

Nothing like a smooth, clear canvas for skincare and makeup especially if you have a “hairy” face (like me!)

Side note, if anyone knows a way to permanently remove blonde / clear hair from the face LET ME KNOW.

1.) Start on clean skin

This doesn’t mean start on cleansed skin, in fact, I don’t wash my face until afterwords but we’ll get to that. I do like to start on skin that doesn’t have any product on it - so mornings after waking up are the best time. This ensures that you arent opening your pores and getting makeup, products, oils or SPF inside them.

2.) Apply a serum or gentle jelly cleanser as your lubricant

You’ll want to make sure you aren’t shaving a dry face, this can be really irritating and even lead to micro-tears in your skin. Always have a slippery base down before you begin. I personally use either a jelly like cleanser like the Peach & Lily Hydrating Gel Cleanser (a personal fave - available at Ulta or on Amazon)

3.) Use a clean razor (make sure its designed for the face!)

Do not, I repeat, do not use a standard shaving razor on your face!!! This can be really damaging especially for the contours around the cheekbones, jawline, and eyebrows. Make sure you’re using an ‘eyebrow razor’ or at home dermaplaner. I’ll link my favorite from amazon here. They’re a little more expensive than some but I find the heads are easy to clean and I can use them about 3 times each, as compared to the cheaper ones that dull out quickly and can only be used once. A sharp blade is key to a close shave without irritating the skin or causing acne

4.) Cleanse!

Now that you’ve shaved your face you can properly cleanse it, I like to use a gentle cleanser (like the peach and lily mentioned above) to wash my face after dermaplaning - go easy on your skin don’t rub it too hard. Avoid all chemical and physical exfoliants for a day or two.

5.) Gentle Skincare

Apply the rest of your skincare gently - stick to the basics, no acids, no retinols, and if you have acne prone skin use water based serums and creams rather than oil based ones, especially since your pores will be more open and prone to clogging after a shave.

6.) Pause before SPF / makeup

I also like to wait an extra long time to apply my SPF and makeup after a shave - at least 1 hour. If that’s not an option for you with school or work, don’t stress - do this routine on a Saturday or Sunday morning when you might have more time. It’s important to give your skin time to breathe after dermaplaning - don’t just cake on the products right away, trust me!

Pro Tip: You shouldn’t dermaplane more than once a week at most - I do it every 10 days or so, otherwise it can be irritating to the skin.

I really hope this post helps <3 Good luck

Love,

Isa
